1. Major Achievements

The total of 2146.8 Mt of Organic Flagship Commodities were produced and traded, generating Nu. 261.28 Million income to the farmers. Around 1048 Farmers are engaged in Organic farming covering about 1885 acres around the country.

The total of 26.6 acres are under Organic Ginger Cultivation. It is expected to produce 73. 15 MT and will be harvested in December 2020. However, about 2.1 MT of organic Ginger were harvested in August 2020 during Lock down and marketed.

The total of 26.6 acres are under Organic Ginger Cultivation. It is expected to produce 73. 15 MT and will be harvested in December 2020. However, about 2.1 MT of organic Ginger were harvested in August 2020 during Lock down and marketed.

About 165.86 acres of organic asparagus were planted and expected to produce 263 MT in third year. The highest cultivation was done in Paro Dzongkhags and about 41.97 acres were planted.

The three large scale & four mid-scale organic commercial farms were established. The NOFP provided support for land development, seeds, technical inputs and other production materials. Total of 20 numbers of jobs were created through this commercial farm.

The total of 144.6 acres of land were developed and brought under organic production. To mechanized the field, 67 acres of land were stone picked using stone picking machine. The chili transplanter equipment’s has been tested and promoted in the farmers field.

Three small scale organic manure production units were upscaled and three new unit of organic manure production were established. Six Smaller compost production unit were also established in LUCs located in Trashigang, Tashiyangtse, Mongar & Pemagathsel. The total of 100 MT of Organic manure was produced.

2. Current Activities & Its Status

A. Commodity Production

  • Seeds and other production materials were supplied to the farmers in the selected NOFP sites. Targets to produce 3800 MT of selected agriculture commodities (Buckwheat, Ginger, Turmeric, Mushroom, Cardamom, Asparagus, Quinoa, Chili, Cauliflower, Beans), 1.5 MT of organic Trout and 6.3 MT of Lemon grass oil.
  • One largest commercial organic farm was established at Chuzergang under Sarpang Dzongkhag. About 70 acres of fallow land were developed and brought under cultivation. Cultivation of winter vegetables were initiated.
  • 15 numbers of Buckwheat dehusking machines were supplied to the Buckwheat growers.
  • Initiated organic seed production. The seed processing and packaging is happening. It will be launched soon.

B. Manure Production

  • The work to operationalize the Bhutan Organic Fertilizers Plant at Pasakha has been started. The machine procurement and other additional compost shed constructions are under process.
  • The production of vermicompost from three unit in Tsirang, one unit in Dagana and one unit in Samtse has commenced. It is expected to generate 300 MT.
  • The Organic manure production by Bhutan Board Product Limited is under process. The product will be launched in June.
  • Completed design and drawings for construction of microbiology laboratory and Biocontrol laboratory.

C. Marketing

  • Completed construction Organic sales outlet at CFM, Thimphu. Signed MoU with Bhutan Smart Shop for marketing of organic produce and operation of organic sales outlet.
  • Construction of Organic sales outlet at Paro has been initiated.
  • Exporting of 20MT of organic products to Malayasia is under process. The processing of Turmeric powder is ongoing at Daga Masala Adding Unit (DAMU) at Dagana and Ginger powder processing at Bhutan Green Products processing Unit at Samdrupjongkhar.

D. Organic Certification

  • The construction of two storied Organic Laboratory at National Centre for Organic Agriculture at Yusipang is ongoing.
  • The Organic registration and certification have been operationalized. The registration of Organic farmers under LOAS is under on going.

3. Way Forward

  • Target to produce 12000 Mt of selected commodities.

  • Construct Microbiology and Bio control Laboratory.

  • Construct high end organic sales outlet at Paro.

  • Establish two processing and value addition enterprises.

  • Establish commercial organic farms.

  • Establish three collection /aggregation centers at Strategic Locations.

  • Operationalized the Organic Fertilizers production from Bhutan Organic Fertilizers plant, Pasakha.
